These cut paper pieces are a body of work through which I am attempting to understand my own fears about what it means to be small in a large world on both a finite and infinite level, in the physical and immaterial world, in the midst of a vast expanse of a dark starry universe.

The act of cutting this dark paper opens a path for light to move through. While the paper is the physical material of the work, the light becomes the vehicle through which the piece can be seen. The paper hangs in front of the wall; the play of shadow and light behind the paper becomes the work by creating a new space behind and a new space to view the whole piece when standing in front of it. The interplay between light, shadow, and paper is confused depending where the viewer stands.

The patterns of the cut outs are based on photographs taken by the Hubble space telescope.
